At the Asian Championship in Tianjin, Thailand took the title by beating hosts China in the final, while Japan won the bronze medal match and claimed the third ticket. The NORCECA region played in Santo Domingo: Cuba and the Dominican Republic reached the semifinals and both qualified, while fifth-placed Puerto Rico still took the third berth because Canada and the USA already held host tickets. In Nairobi, Egypt beat Kenya in the African final, with Cameroon taking bronze and the remaining ticket. The European Championship in Istanbul finished with Turkiye, Italy and Serbia on the podium, where Serbia, Poland and Turkiye claimed the three continental berths because Italy already had one. The South American Championship in Rio de Janeiro confirmed Brazil, Argentina and Colombia as gold, silver and bronze medallists, all three heading to the World Cup.

The four European semifinalists were Italy, Serbia, Poland and Turkiye. Three of them had to use a continental berth; the other is already the reigning world champion. One confederation has four teams good enough to reach a World Cup semifinal, and that is only the visible part of its player-production chain. Poland advanced without needing any special exemption. Serbia kept its blocking structure intact. Turkiye won the whole tournament at home, a sign their development pipeline has kicked in. When three stylistically different squads all qualify, the issue is domestic league infrastructure, not one golden generation.

That is a feature of the format, not any team's fault, but it means a fifth-placed team in Santo Domingo holds a ticket while a fourth-placed team in Asia goes home.

Where could I be wrong? In reading a regional tournament too quickly as a long-term trend. Thailand won in Tianjin, but China remains Asia's largest volleyball system, and one final does not erase a decade of infrastructure. Wrong, too, in treating continental ranking as a gauge of World Cup form, when the Asian event falls mid-cycle and the 2027 World Cup is more than a year away, enough time for a young squad to change completely.
