Atlanta Hawks 2026-27: Roster Depth, Multi-Level Defense and a Quiet Resurgence

From the CBA, I learned that raw gems are not found in highlights, but in quiet minutes. That sentence has stayed with me for years, from gyms in China to NBA arenas. When I studied the Atlanta Hawks' offseason recap, I saw a team moving forward without noise. They did not make a blockbuster trade, but they built a deeper roster, improved their defense, and enter the new season with a major question: can the stability from last season's second half become a real breakout? The Hawks finished last season 46-36, sixth in the East, after losing to New York Knicks in the first round. They traded Trae Young and acquired CJ McCollum, who helped them go 27-14 and climb from ninth to sixth. McCollum averaged 18.7 points. Jalen Johnson had his first All-Star and All-NBA season with 22.5 points, 10.3 rebounds and 7.9 assists. Nickeil Alexander-Walker won Most Improved Player after averaging 20.8 points with strong shooting splits. In the offseason, Atlanta added Luguentz Dort, Kingston Flemings, Zuby Ejiofor, Ryan Nembhard, Henri Veesaar and Aaron Wiggins. Dort brings defensive intensity, Wiggins brings winning experience, and Flemings is a lottery pick. The roster now has depth and versatility around Dyson Daniels, Alexander-Walker, Johnson and Onyeka Okongwu. Quin Snyder wants a defense that forces turnovers and creates transition offense, with nearly 40 three-point attempts per game. The Hawks ranked 14th in offensive efficiency and 10th in defensive efficiency last season, so there is room to grow. A bench with Dort, Wiggins, Jock Landale, Buddy Hield, Corey Kispert and others gives Snyder options against any opponent. Aaron Wiggins is my breakout candidate. He won a championship with Oklahoma City and played in the 2026 Western Conference finals, but he never exceeded 24.2 minutes per game after his rookie season. He is a 48.7% shooter from the field and 38% from three. With more minutes in Atlanta, he could score more and improve the Hawks' half-court efficiency. There is a flaw in my optimism: only eight of the Hawks' 20 post-break wins came against teams with winning records. But the Hawks took a 2-1 lead over the Knicks in the playoffs and won two games against the eventual champions. The other three Knicks postseason opponents combined for one win. That is a meaningful data point. Five matchups will test Atlanta early: October 21 against Orlando Magic, November 29 against New York Knicks, February 1 against Trae Young and Washington Wizards, February 8 against Miami Heat before the trade deadline, and April 4 against Philadelphia 76ers at the end of a brutal road stretch. The preseason will define the rotation. The lineup of McCollum, Alexander-Walker, Daniels, Johnson and Okongwu was plus-20.3 with a 20-10 record, but that group had no Dort or Wiggins. Snyder must decide who starts and who comes off the bench. The backup power forward spot is open between Mouhamed Gueye, Asa Newell and Ejiofor, while Flemings can learn behind McCollum. Winning is a product of decisions made before the game starts. Atlanta made a bold decision by moving on from Trae Young. Now they need to prove their defensive identity can survive a full season. I do not know if they are title contenders, but the data says they are a dangerous team in the East. That is enough for me to watch closely.
